Vegetable Growing – The Basics

Are you thinking of growing vegetables for the first time in 2024? Whether you are making a new vegetable growing plot in your garden or taking on an allotment, this course will give you all the basics.

You will learn how to:

• Layout your growing area, paying particular attention to where gets the most sun and how your plot drains.
• select the right vegetables for your garden, with emphasis on those that are easy to grow
• start plants from seeds and when and how to plant them out
• rotate the plants in your plot to improve soil quality
• identify common diseases and pest and how to deal with them
• know when your crops are ready to harvest

Organic Vegetable Growing

Tony Chalcraft, a local organic vegetable expert, will once again be leading our vegetable growing courses in 2024. He will provide you with plenty of tips as to how to grow vegetables for your enjoyment.

Organic gardening is a proven way of gardening well and involves creating your own compost, using natural methods for fertilisation, weed control and pest control.

The workshop will mainly be held indoors with a presentation from Tony and you will provided with plenty of useful hand outs. You will get an opportunity to see the vegetable garden here at Stillingfleet Lodge as a reference point.

Using organic methods, Tony has grown just about every type of fruit and vegetable that can be grown in the North of England. He specialises in having fresh produce all through the year, mainly grown outside, but also using greenhouses and a polytunnel. It is this expertise that make his courses here so popular.
